What’s the deal with organic cotton and why is it better than non-organic cotton?
Non-organic cotton is grown with pesticides, insecticides and other toxic chemicals. What’s inside this cotton will soon be on your skin and believe me, you don’t want any of it anywhere near you.
Organic cotton uses less water in the planting, harvesting and fabrication process, which means it’s more sustainably produced. Organic fertilizers are used in organic cotton while synthetic fertilizers are used in non-organic cotton. Organic cotton uses safer alternatives to chemical dyes while a large amount of chemicals is used in processing non-organic cotton, like heavy metal, chlorine, chemicals and dyes.
Organic cotton is completely handpicked, preserving purity of every fiber and ensuring there’s no damaged fiber. Machines pick up regular cotton so as to speed the process. Organic cotton fibers are softer and more comfortable than cotton ones.
Apparel made with non-organic cotton causes skin irritation or allergy as chemicals may be found in the finished product.
This organic cotton cultivation and processing is safe for people as no unhygienic chemicals are used. Non-organic cotton cultivation and processing, which is intensely dependent on unhygienic chemicals kills many farmers annually worldwide.
According to The World Counts more chemical pesticides are used for cotton than for any other crop. Cotton accounts for 16 percent of global insecticide releases. 60% of the world’s cotton is used for clothing and another 35% for home furnishing.
From an ecological point of view, harvesting organic cotton builds strong soil through crop rotation. Also, water is retained more efficiently thanks to increase organic matter in the soil. For non-organic cotton fields, there is a loss of soil due to predominantly mono-crop culture and they also require intensive irrigation.
Organic cotton is eco-friendly. Non-organic cotton contaminates the ground water, killing fish, birds, other animals and and destroying the environment.
The choice is yours!
