How to be more sustainable while traveling
Planning a trip somewhere this summer? Have you thought about ways to be more sustainable while on the road? Sustainable travel is the process of making simple choices in order to lessen your negative impact on a given destination.
Avoid Bottled Water
Plastic bottles account for a lot of waste. Intrepid Travel has worked with hotels in Asia to install water filters that travellers can use to fill re-useable bottles with safe water.
Pack Light
It’s simple, the less you pack the less impact you have in many ways. For one, when your bags weigh less, the airplane also weighs less, which in turn equals less fuel and less carbon emissions under your name. It also means you can use public transportation easier too.
Don’t travel by plane
Traveling by bus, train, or boat generally has less negative environmental impact than traveling by plane. This helps protect carbon emissions to the precious area you are in.
Support Local Stores
Buy locally made (preferably handmade) products, rather than those that have been imported. Items that are flown or shipped in have a much larger carbon footprint.
Save Paper
Return maps, brochures, and other tourist info once you’re finished with them so that they may be reused by future travelers. Alternatively, use your phone to search for information online vs using paper.
Don’t feed or ride animals
Most animals are taken from their mothers and families in the wild and tortured till they oblige. Feeding animals makes them habituated to and reliant on humans.
